  1. A small reproductive or resting body, usually
  2. consisting of just one cell. Unlike a gamete,
  3. it does not need to fuse with another cell in
  4. order to develop into a new organism. Spores
  5. are produced by the lower plants, most fungi,
  6. some bacteria, and certain protozoa. They are
  7. generally light and easily dispersed by wind
  8. movements. Plant spores are haploid and are
  9. produced by the sporophyte, following
  10. meiosis; see alternation of generations.
